lashes without mascara, not curled
lashes curled, mascara applied
So, there are two make-up products that I absolutely cannot stop buying - foundation (as you might have guessed from my epic Base Quest post!) and mascara.
I literally posted a mascara review a month ago and now I'm back with another one, but don't laugh or judge, I really feel this might be the one. I've only ever said that about one mascara before (Benefit's They're Real) but I truly think this mascara might just have hit Holy Grail status!
Funnily enough I was actually on the verge of repurchasing They're Real after 18 months without it in my possession. As I was umming over the £19.50 purchase in Boots (I swear it was cheaper last time I bought it?) my friend Geo (who may I add has lovely lashes) pointed me in the direction of the Rimmel stand to show me her daily favourite, Volume FlashX10.
It was £5.99. I was easily swayed, okay? And my thinking was, for that price, I could afford for it to be a dud. I'm not generally a fan of Rimmel mascaras since they decided to discontinue my old favourite Sexy Curves mascara. Please tell me someone else remembers it? Purple packaging with, erm, curves? And one of those brilliantly swirly odd-shaped brushes? Anyone?
I digress. I chose the waterproof version as I suffer from sweaty eyelids (and a sweaty face in general, nice) and also find waterproof formulas hold a good curl in general - there's nothing worse than taking time to apply make-up and then having droopy lashes after an hour!
My first impressions were pretty good - the brush is nice and sturdy and combs my lashes nicely. I'm not a fan of ultra springy brushes so I was pleased with this! The formula is very wet and I did end up with a few stray splodges on my lids - to remedy this I have been wiping any excess product on kitchen towel before application and it's absolutely fine after this. I expect I'll love it even more once it dries up a bit!
I tend to apply a couple of coats of any mascara so make no exception for this one. It really helps to fan out my lashes and it's especially effective after using lash curlers. My lashes aren't in great condition - a rogue No7 lash curler tore out a few of my lashes so I've got a mixture of long ones and stubby ones - but this mascara really makes them stand out and look heaps longer! I've even taken to wearing just mascara on my eyes - no shadow, no liner - which is practically unheard of for me, but I genuinely feel this mascara provides all the definition I need. It lasts all day too which is another first for me, and the formula doesn't go hard and bitty on my lashes after a while which is great as I have a nasty habit of picking off thick mascara (sshhh..I know).
Another note - like most waterproof formulations it is a bit of a nightmare to remove, it usually takes a couple of pumps of my No7 oil cleanser to get rid of it (coconut oil works just as well) but I remember the Benefit mascara being just as tricky! Just something to bear in mind if you're a quick wash-face-and-go type of girl.
Overall I am so pleased with this mascara - the only thing I find a bit iffy is the name (what does it even mean?) but it's a minor detail I can overlook as I adore the effects so much! I would definitely repurchase and for £5.99 I would heartily recommend giving this mascara a try!
Love Dani

I used to like the Sexy Curves too! I'm so clumsy I never seem to get on with really wet formulas now so I tend to avoid Rimmel mascaras. Your lashes look so lovely though! xx
