Dani Dunne - UK lifestyle blog
Hello you lovely lot!

Hands up who's missed my awkward selfies? Jon abandoned me today to spend time with a friend, so I had to resort to setting up the old tripod and trying to work out the dynamics of focus and the self-timer. This experiment has confirmed my early diagnosis - I need a remote.
It was another scorcher (I actually got burnt, oops) so out came another Dorothy Perkins jersey dress - hey I told you, I have LOTS of these - this time with no sleeves (gulp). I did start my day with a cardigan but it was just unbearable, so the world just had to endure the sight of my arms. Sorry not sorry.

Dress - Dorothy Perkins
Necklace - erm, Dorothy Perkins
Lipstick - Topshop Brighton Rock (dabbed on)
Watch - DKNY

I promise I do not work for or get paid by Dorothy Perkins in any way. I just throw a lot of my money at them. I even picked this dress up without trying it on because I was sooo confident it would fit. And it does! Although the top can be a bit loose (I swear this usually never happens, I usually have the opposite problem) so I'd probably have got away with a 12, but oh well, you live and learn.
It also has pockets (bonus!) and I like that the straps are quite substantial - no accidental bra strap flashing here, thank you!
It's been so blissful having a couple of days off week this week - thanks to the weather it's really felt like a holiday! After snapping these I went off to Westfield for a couple of hours to pick up a few things and made a couple of purchases I'm looking forward to sharing with you! It got super busy after a while though (well, when isn't it busy?) so I spent the remainder of the afternoon finishing the latest Neil Gaiman book (it's a good 'un) and listening to the Game of Thrones soundtrack. Seriously, "Rains of Castamere" gives me chills! If you're a soundtrack music nut like I am, then I'd definitely recommend this beautiful violin mix of a few of my faves - it's simply beautiful! The artist is Jason Yang and you can find it here. This guy is so talented I could cry!

Do you have any soundtracks you adore? Hit me with your recommendations, I love discovering new music to love!

Hello my lovelies,

Hope you're all having a good week so far! My Twitter timeline is full of people complaining about the weather, so I'm just going to get out there and say it - I love that it's actually hot in July! Sure, 30 degree heat isn't fun when you're in an office 90% of the time, but I've been able to eat lunch outside and walk to work without a jacket and it's AWESOME. I could definitely get used to this!
It also means that all this year's graduates don't have to plan around unpredictable weather - when I graduated two years ago I had two outfit options depending on whether it rained or not and it made the day so much more stressful in my opinion. Thankfully, the weather held out for my cousin Naomi's big day today and I didn't have to dig out the old black opaques (in hindsight not the best thing as it was super windy down in old Canterbury).
Whilst waiting for the actual graduates to finish taking official photos, we snuck around the back of the cathedral to my favourite photo spot... I loved having my own graduation pics taken here (which you can see in this post) and eventually took some of Naomi as well! Of course, it was the perfect opportunity to snap some outfit pics - well, what else would you expect?

Dress - Dorothy Perkins
Bag - Red Herring
Shoes - Primark
Food baby - ASK Italian...

I am actually obsessed with these Dorothy Perkins dresses, they're so easy to throw on and really comfy too. Am tempted to do a post on them as they seem to be a "thing" now - stay tuned...

I always consider it a successful day when I can get some nice shots of Jon and I - hurrah for couple photos! There are always ridiculous out-takes though (is it just us??) - this was because Jon tried to get me to give him a piggy-back. It didn't work.
I always love going back to Canterbury - I have so many good memories of this place and it really does feel like home to me! It's particularly lovely in the sunshine, and so nice seeing all the graduates in their robes with their proud parents. It genuinely doesn't feel like two years have passed since I was one of them - where does the time go?! If you do visit, take some time out from the High Street (although it is BRILLIANT) and take a wander down some of the back streets - there are some fab independent shops, pubs (there are over 600 in the surrounding area!) and beautiful tranquil views like this around every corner:

Ahh. I can haz more Kent time, please?

Hello my lovelies,

I am happy to put my hands up and say it - I'm obsessed with hair products. If it promises to nourish, smoothen, defrizz, enhance growth, well it's probably already in my bathroom somewhere. Anything to help with my ongoing quest for longer locks!

I won't get started on my hair oils just yet (I currently have 3 in rotation...) but these two products are relatively new buys and I like them enough to recommend. Yay!

The first one is by Dove from their Nourishing Oil range - I like Dove a lot but for some reason seem to overlook their products in favour of more expensive flashy ones. Doh! I realised my mistake recently when picking up this leave in conditioner spray. I love the 1 minute conditioning treatment in this range so this partly swayed my decision - it's also cheaper than my usual Aussie spray and as I'm poorer than a church mouse these days I like to save wherever I can.

I quite like this - it's no miracle worker but I use it overnight to cool my head down and to provide some care for my frazzled ends. I also like to spray a little into my hands and rub through the ends after styling as it smooths down flyways and makes them feel a bit softer. Soft is good right?

Speaking of soft, if you want lovely soft touchable hair then the L'Oreal Smooth and Polish serum is a good budget option. I'm not normally a L'Oreal person - their ads are laughable and I'm sick of seeing Cheryl Cole bleating on about whatever shampoo she's promoting at the moment so it does put me off a bit! However this was on 3 for 2 alongside the Dove spray and a shampoo I bought and I figured it couldn't hurt. At first I didn't get on with it at all - I used a blob in damp hair and it was as useful as a chocolate teapot. Same frizz, same big bushy head. Then one day I randomly decided to use it on dry hair... And it was amazing. I had like movie star locks, they were soft and shiny and less puffy than usual! So now I use a blob of this after blow drying and before straightening and I swear my style holds longer too. Very impressed and I'll probably repurchase when it runs out!

Oh, both products smell delish too  - in case that's a requirement for you (it is for me, nothing worse than stinky locks!)

What are your favourite hair products at the moment? Any recommendations?

Love Dani

Hello my lovelies!
I've always been a bit on the fence about weekly Instagram posts - I like reading other people's but don't like just seeing endless pics rehashed off their feed - I like a bit of text! I've never considered doing one of my own before because my  life is pretty uneventful and I post anything vaguely photo-worthy on Instagram anyway. But in my recent bid to post more I wondered if it might not serve some sort of purpose ... I get to ramble on a bit more and go into a bit more detail than I do on Instagram! So... Let's give this a try!
1. These are my in-laws' dogs - yes they're spooning! So cute! Half my camera roll consists of dog photos - in fact my Instagram should probably just be renamed Polkadog.
2. Celebrating my Jon's birthday with some glorious sunshine! I took loads of photos so this is the only one with me in it really.
3. The new Neil Gaiman book! Purchased as a present for Jon, I snapped it up as soon as he turned the last page. Have only just started it but will report back - I'm a bit biased though as I love Neil Gaiman's work!
4. My adopted home country on BBC News! This is such a rarity I took a snapshot. Ahem. Seriously though this is like big news, we usually only have runaway cattle or failed burglaries in our newspapers back home!

5. Have taken to doing my hair in front of the fan in our bedroom...it's the only way to use ghds in this weather I swear!
6. Trying out an Anatomicals chocolate mask. It was an effort not to lick this off my face. I also made Jon giggle by declaring it was my TOWIE tan!
7. Pulling faces with the bestie after devouring a summer picnic. Not just any summer picnic...an M&S summer picnic. I love their cranberry lemonade!
8. Token sunshine through leaves photo. We lay there for hours... Blissful! Why do I have to go back to work again? Can I move my desk outside?

What are your thoughts on these little life updates? Yay or nay? Please let me know your thoughts, they are always welcome!

Love Dani

Hi my lovelies,

I'm sure you've all heard of BB creams by now - beauty balms, another word for tinted moisturiser, big in Asia - you know it all by now. And I'm sure that there are people out there like me who approached the subject with a scrunched up face and a whole lot of trepidation. Skincare benefits? Great. Light to transparent coverage? Not so great.

I'm the girl that has to be physically separated from her Double Wear and Studio Fix. If it ain't thick, heavy and of the same consistency as paint, I don't want it. Light coverage won't hide my blemishes, scars, dark circles and general uneven skintone. I'm the girl who wore full face makeup to Disney World, for goodness' sake!

And yet... I was intrigued. I too picked up the first Garnier offering when it hit the shelves of Boots. It's now sitting somewhere in the deep dark depths of my "disappointing products" drawer. I haven't even been able to pass it on to a nicer-skinned friend or sister. It was just blah. I declared it to be a failure and vowed never to stray from my heavy coverage bases again.

But I did... See, for all my layers and layers of make up, I dream of fresh-faced beauty. Of glowing natural skin a la Vivianna Does Make Up or Kate from Gh0stparties. So I bought more BB creams. And I actually use them this time round!

Essentially, if your skin is as imperfect as mine and you cannot bear the thought of going bare-faced with all the pimples on show, there is a way you can enjoy BB creams without skimping on coverage.

I use mine as a foundation forerunner. I sweep on a layer of whichever cream takes my fancy (always over primer though!) and then simply dot a teeny bit of foundation where my problem areas are (my whole face, most of the time). It helps me use less foundation, thus letting them last longer (a godsend if they're high end and cost a few bob to replace!) and my skin still looks relatively natural afterwards.

In recent weeks I've even branched out and LAYERED two BB creams - I know, shocking right? I like to use the Vichy Idealia BB cream first as the coverage is very low and it's a shade lighter than my natural skintone, then follow on with the Dr Jart Water Fuse BB cream as it's heavier coverage and when mixed with the Vichy matches my skin colour exactly! I then follow on with concealer if needed, a spritz of MAC Fix + and voila, a quick and suitable summertime face!

Of course it's all very well me rabbiting on about how it works for me, but it wouldn't be a review without an enormous and uncomfortably close picture to prove it:

Perfect skin it ain't but I feel my blemishes are sufficiently covered, or at worst could pass for freckles (yes let's go with freckles). And this was after a day traipsing around London in the heat!

What's your opinion on BB creams? Are you a convert or still on the fence like I was?

Hello my lovelies,

I apologise in advance but this is gonna be a long one! There's a lot going on in my head so hey, why not share? No one has to read if they don't want to, I figured.

I've just spent a few minutes changing my blog header (more pink! Less pink? Some nice handwriting! Not mine...) and by chance happened to notice the amount of posts I've put up this year.

16.

Halfway through the year and I have only managed to post sixteen times?! Aghast at my utter lack of productivity with regard to this little space of internet that is mine, I promptly set to analysing why I have let this happen. Blame work! Oh yes, full-time work doesn't leave much time for blogging, and admittedly when I get home most evenings I can't even bring myself to turn my laptop on after staring at a screen all day. But really, it shouldn't be an excuse. I have a smartphone. I have weekends. I have some free time. Really, it's just laziness (and exhaustion). Plus it is an issue for hundreds of other bloggers I follow and they all pull it off, heck, even I pull it off some of the time (sixteen times now apparently).

Lack of inspiration? I don't think I can blame this either. I read enough blogs and have so many thoughts and ideas off the back of them, inspiration from things I see or try or read, that if I took the time to write about them my blog would be never-ending. God knows I own enough clothes to write about all the time! Let's try something else.

Photographs! No, this isn't really an issue. Looking back through my photo folders this year I have plenty of pictures not yet shown on the blog. Not even uploaded to Facebook (although somehow there are over 1000 pictures of me on there. Wow). Admittedly I don't get many that pass my standards as I don't like forcing Jon to take pictures of me as he gets bored quickly. I also have a fancy new(ish) camera, a couple of lenses to play with, a tripod that hasn't broken yet, and the aforementioned smartphone for emergencies. So what's the problem here?

It's not easy to admit, for something that must surely plague a lot of other people. But back to the standards I mentioned... I just don't think I live up to my own most of the time. So many occasions where I have forced Jon to take pictures of me ("Come on, just a few for the blog!") and then I get home and...bleurgh. My tummy is sticking out. Urgh, those arms. I can't believe I thought that dress was flattering! What is going ON with those brows? My hair? My skin? Let's crop it. No, that's even worse! I can't do this...

And the laptop turns off. I genuinely don't know what comes over me. I don't like to think of myself as a person with low self-esteem. I'm quite happy with my life. I am loved. I have a job and a home. I'm not ill. I don't consider myself "fat" as such - don't get me wrong, I am plump and just about contained by a size 14, and could probably afford to lose a couple of stone, but I'm not about to hide myself away in a hole because of it. There are worse things in life than carrying a few extra pounds - trust me, I've been there. I've been slimmer and I've been larger and when I was at my skinniest I was also at my unhappiest, so it's hard for me to reconcile weight with general happiness. But over the past year I've noticed the weight begin to creep on due to a number of factors and I wonder if this is affecting the way I feel about posting photos of myself online.

The thing is though, I've never looked at my blogposts and thought "wow I look good" before. That's not the point for me. I don't want to promote any sort of beauty ideal, I don't want to boast about the way I look or make anyone envious or aspire to be like me. I like clothes, and I like make-up and I like talking about clothes and make-up. I also feel it's easier to talk about these while showing what I am talking about. I find it inspirational reading other blogs and seeing how other people dress and make themselves up - it gives me ideas, regardless of what size they are or how flawless their skin is. When I post I hope I'm doing the same for my readers - perhaps they considered buying that dress and if it looks alright on me it might swing their decision! That mascara made my stubby lashes look good - might work well for you too! But I'm not going to lie, it does boost my own confidence when people comment on how pretty this dress was, or how nice my hair looked in that picture. So there is definitely a link and even an element of narcissism in the whole thing - I pick and choose my pictures so carefully now, knowing they'll be scrutinised by whoever lands on my page. If I don't like my chin or my arms or heaven forbid if the tummy looks enormous then I delete the photo.

But... I don't do the same to other people. I don't read other blogs and think they look fat in that top, or that colour does nothing for them, the way I criticise myself. In fact, I actually prefer reading blogs by people the same size as me or similar, because I figure if they look good maybe I don't look so bad?

Today I went out on a limb and wore shorts and a T-shirt out, in the big wide world, because it was simply too hot to cover up. It was terrifying - I spent the whole day stressing about my ugly feet and unevenly toned legs, wobbly thighs, flabby arms, massive stomach, grotesquely large chest and spotty skin. But nothing happened. No one stopped me in the street to tell me to cover up. No one pointed and laughed. No one gawped in horror or covered their child's eyes. So maybe, just maybe, I could post some of the outfits that didn't pass my standards. Why shouldn't I be honest, after all?

I didn't post this because several other bloggers have since worn the same dress and looked much better than I did:

I didn't post this because my dark circles looked like I had been punched and my hair was a mess (on reflection I actually quite like this photo!)

And I didn't post this because my arms and chest look vast and also ghostly pale in comparison to the rest of me. There's roughly eight tummy rolls in there too.

Before anyone queries it I would just like to make it clear that I'm not writing this to invite a bunch of comments telling me I'm being silly and look great, or accusing me of fishing for compliments - that's not the point! I think blogging really does put an onus on showing the best of you - and I totally get that - but who decides what is the best? Are we too harsh on ourselves? Do people want to see more realistic and honest accounts of other people's lives, or should bloggers gloss over the "ugly" side of things and only show what people want to see? I think I like a bit of both - reading aspirational blogs is great and I love the ideas I get from them but at the same time I beat myself up because I'm not as pretty as llymlrs, not as sophisticated as The Londoner, I don't rock a dress like essbeevee, my photographs don't hold a candle to Rachel Phipps, and I'm not as stylish or photogenic as Carrie from Wishwishwish. And I wonder if this is why I hold myself back and refuse to post anything I don't classify as "good enough" to show the world.

What do you think about the whole self-esteem through blogging thing? Is it helping or actually making things worse? I think there are positives and negatives about putting yourself out there on the internet but am always happy to see what other people think :) I for one am going to try and relax my standards a bit, even if I don't look like a size 12 in that dress or if my skin's playing up again, because really, does anybody care?

Love Dani

xoxo

Disclaimer - I picked those blogs specifically only because I've read posts from them today and so they are fresh in mind, no other reason :)
Hello my lovelies,

You may have an inkling that I am somewhat of a make up fiend... Not sure where you'd get that idea from though (ahem). At any rate I love spending hours scrolling through other people's blogs and reading about their wonder products, and a particular favourite of mine is seeing what people rely on to get them through a busy day. Travel make up if you will.

So without further ado, this is what weighs down my handbag on a daily basis:

Cleanliness first gals! The Soap & Glory hand gel (1) is perfect for getting rid of any grubby train germs, and I use this all the time - admittedly because it smells amazing! It does dry your hands out though so it's a good idea to have the matching Hand Food cream (1) around so you don't get flaky hands (sexy).

I don't know about you but I have a real eye issue during a work day - my eyelashes droop and my concealer wears away quite easily, so I always keep a mascara and concealer on hand for touch ups. Chanel Inimitable Intense (2) is perfect, and Benefit Fake Up concealer (3) is so easy to apply and blend, no brushes needed!
My skin also drinks up my blusher, especially if I use a powder, so I keep the lovely Topshop cream blush in Neon Rose (4) on hand for emergency brightness requirements (it helps that it has a fab mirror and sturdy case too!).

Finally, let's get lippy! I just cannot go a whole day without applying some sort of lip product, so I like to have choices (5). The Revlon Balm Stains are my hero products because they keep my lips soft, the colour lasts ages and also you don't need a mirror to apply (although be careful when doing your upper lip - pink moustaches aren't as hot as you'd think). I also like to carry a real lipstick around though, for a brighter finish, and for this I like using Topshop's lippie in Brighton Rock - it's a gorgeous summery colour that I adore!

What do you carry around with you every day? Does it give you neck-ache like mine does??

Love Dani xoxo

Hello my lovelies,

Oh it's been a stressful couple of weeks, I apologise for the lack of posts! Busy workdays coupled with a lingering head cold has meant I spend most evenings snoozing on the sofa or staring blearily at the ever-growing list of chores to complete. It's just so hard to do anything productive when you feel rubbish! Case in point - last Saturday I headed to Oxford Street with my friend Geo armed with a list of things to buy...however, once we hit the madness that was Central London in the aftermath of Pride our enthusiasm wilted quickly, and we ended up spending the time lying on the grass in Hyde Park for a bit instead.

Not always such a bad thing... We both enjoyed the oh-so-rare sunshine and I even convinced her to snap some outfit pics for me!

Trousers & shoes - New Look/ Top - H&M/Blazer - Next
These trousers have become such a vital part of my weekly wardrobe, I fear I will have to buy some more. Loose and light, they're so easy to throw on with a nice top, so much better than sticky jeans or heavy leggings! I teamed them with my trusty lace blazer, which is the perfect summer cover-up as it's equally light and airy (but hides ye olde arm flab). Add some wind-mussed hair and squinty-sun-face and voila, it's summer Dani!

I did manage to pick up a few pieces the day after our failed shopping trip so I'll show you those in due course - including  some lovely make-up bits I'm quite pleased with because they actually manage to last all day, wahey! I'm off for another snooze now though....

Love Dani
